Pain can be initiated by situations as different as bumping one’s elbow, an aching tooth, or the loss of a loved one. Thus, what do we mean, if we talk about pain? Is there one such thing or many? Can pain change? Can we change pain? And as a scientist most importantly, can we measure pain and what do such measurements tell us? We will demonstrate how aspects of pain can be measured. We will show you how this may help diagnosing clinically relevant conditions by e.g. measuring aspects of pain in the context of lipedema. This condition is described by the affected women as “legs which feel like being filled with cement”, “constant tiredness of legs”, “oversensitivity and pain in legs”. And thereby we will show you, how the understanding of pain may help modulating it. |
